Announcing the Winners of Signal’s 2015 Your Journey Ahead Scholarship

January 28, 2015

At Signal, we use marketing and technology data to improve the customer’s journey, but we also wanted to support young people on their educational journey. That’s why we decided to offer two undergraduate students in technology, marketing, or entrepreneurship a scholarship to help fund their college journey.

While we received many excellent entries, and loved reading the stories of so many ambitious and talented young people, two especially stood out to us.

Our first-place winner of a $1,500 scholarship wrote an impactful essay that illustrated her past and the journey she plans for her future. Natalia Montes, a student at the University of Washington, wrote a heartfelt essay about her family’s challenges living in the United States after her parents and older sister emigrated from Mexico in the early 1990s. After moving from the Pacific Northwest to Texas, Natalia’s family faced personal hardships that eventually led them to Florida. Natalia overcame difficult circumstances to return to the Pacific Northwest as a student at the University of Washington, where she is flourishing in her studies on the benefits of technology and science, in combination with philosophy and psychology. With this scholarship, Natalia will be able to continue her journey pursuing her love of learning.

Our second prize winner, Alysa Garrick, used vivid imagery in her essay detailing her experiences working in a local coffee business in Uganda. While helping her uncle to “caffeinate the world,” Alysa saw firsthand how her uncle’s local business helped people grow and lead better lives — which then inspired her to continue helping others by eventually opening her own student-focused community center where children can come learn, play, and impact the next generation. Alysa’s insightful essay earned her our runner-up prize of $500, which will help fund her education at Warner Pacific College.

Congratulations to Natalia and Alysa! We’re so glad to be a part of your educational journeys, and we look forward to seeing what you accomplish next.
